At the Chagall museum in Nice, the exhibition “Je suis bleue” feminizes the artist’s favorite color

In a maze of colored and transparent panels, the exhibition I am blue, at the Chagall museum in Nice, immerses you in the world of visual artist Cécile Bart. Following the predominantly blue geometric shapes, notes of pink, yellow and green emerge and bring the color to life. Through the title of her exhibition, Cécile Bart reappropriates and feminizes a famous expression of Chagall who identified with the color of the ocean and the sky. The visual artist was inspired by her stained glass windows to revisit them with her favorite material: tergal, a translucent synthetic fiber that she coats with paint. Depending on the number of layers, the color becomes more or less vivid and the material more or less opaque: a real play of shadow and light.

It is in its resonance with the spaces of the museum and the wanderings of visitors that the exhibition takes on its full meaning. “Cécile Bart includes the visitor, her participation is essential to understanding, explains Anne Dopffer, general heritage curator and director of the 20th century national museums. She works with the walls, she creates partitions that seem blocked … But in reality, with the transparency and opacity of this work, the visitor absolutely has to move around to really learn about it “, she continues. Before concluding : “vslike in a kind of dance and exploration around the work ”.

I am blue is above all an invitation to contemplation. “It’s a real discovery, we are very happy with my daughter”, says a visitor. “All these colors are magnificent, I also like the effect of transparency, we can see the color, but at the same time it is transparent”, adds his daughter.

The exhibition, which resonates with the public, will also continue to resonate with the artist who inspired it since from September 18, a stroll devoted to the stained glass windows by Chagall will take its place between the walls of the museum.
