The Democratic Speaker of the House of Representatives, Nancy Pelosi, announced Thursday, June 24, the creation of a special commission on the murderous assault on Capitol Hill carried out on January 6 by supporters of Donald Trump. “This morning, with great solemnity and sadness, I announcee that the House will establish a special committee on the January 6 insurrection “, conducted when the US Congress met to certify Joe Biden’s victory in the November 2020 presidential election, over the Republican billionaire.

“It is fundamental that we seek the truth about what happened and make sure that an attack like this cannot happen again.”, continued the leader of the Democrats in the House.

At the end of May, the Republican leaders had opposed the creation of an independent commission, with five members chosen by the Democrats and five others chosen by the Republicans, on the exact model of that created after September 11. They felt that the parliamentary investigations already underway and the work of the police were sufficient. For lack of sufficient support, even though six Republican senators had rallied to the Democrats, Congress had not approved its launch. A month later, the Democrats therefore announced this new commission, which was supposed to centralize the multiple parliamentary inquiries already launched. Composed of elected officials, it risks being perceived as less impartial. Nancy Pelosi did not set a deadline for submitting a final report.
