Austria: police launch more than 60 searches against Islamist movements



The Austrian police searched, Monday, November 9, more than 60 addresses in four regions linked to the Islamist movements of the Muslim Brotherhood and Hamas, announced the prosecution. The authorities nevertheless clarified that these operations had no direct link with the attack perpetrated last week in Vienna, which left four dead.

The investigation, which began about a year ago, aims “more than 70 suspects and several associations suspected of belonging to and supporting the terrorist organizations of the Muslim Brotherhood and Hamas”, indicates in a press release the prosecutor’s office of the Styria region (south-east). The searches, which took place in Styria, Carinthia, Lower Austria and Vienna, aim to “attacking the roots of political Islam”, commented the Minister of the Interior, Karl Nehammer.

Among the suspects, 30 were ordered to report to the police for questioning. The prosecution mentions “suspicions of terrorist organization formation, terrorist financing and money laundering”.
