MEPs will vote on April 27. The European Parliament will vote on this date on the post-Brexit trade agreement concluded at the end of 2020 between the European Union and the United Kingdom, its spokesperson Jaume Duch announced on Thursday April 22 on Twitter. The agreement, which has already been provisionally applied since January 1, governs economic relations between the EU and the United Kingdom on fisheries, customs duties on goods and fair competition in particular.
Provisional application of the post-Brexit treaty is due to end on April 30, but MEPs have long delayed setting a date to vote their consent in protest against London’s postponement of certain goods checks in Northern Ireland. The European Commission, which accuses the United Kingdom of violating the Irish protocol contained in the withdrawal treaty signed at the end of 2019, has for its part launched a contentious procedure.
The divorce between the EU and the UK took place on January 31, 2020. It was followed by a transition period until the end of 2020 to allow negotiation of the new relationship between London and the bloc. European Union, with the signing of a historic agreement on December 24, 2020.
