REPORT – The fire continues to spread in the Var. The authorities are waiting for a lull before taking stock and launching an expertise.
Thursday, August 19, on the fourth day of the fight against the fire which devastated more than 7,000 hectares in the plain and the Maures massif, Colonel Éric Grohin, director of the departmental fire and rescue service (SDIS) of Var , show caution. “The wind should shift to the west this weekend, we are not immune to a recovery because things are going very quickly. Today, in the Mediterranean rim, as we have seen in Algeria or Greece, we are in exceptional conditions in terms of drought and temperatures ”, he explains at the Luc command post, in front of a staff map where a large orange spot delimits the area covered by the fire. It stretches from the A57 motorway, where the fire would have started from a rest area, to the Gulf of Saint-Tropez, where two people died in the disaster of their house and where several thousand campers were evacuated on Monday August 16.
