In an open letter published Tuesday, August 3, around thirty doctors and scientists, “originating from Guadeloupe, Martinique, Guyana and Reunion and / or invested in these territories”, call the ultramarine population to “to get vaccinated”. “We hope that this call will enable our people to overcome their fears, disinformation, fake news, and the widely spread scientific untruths”, they write.
While several overseas territories are facing a sharp deterioration in the health situation, which has notably led to the establishment of confinement in Martinique, Guadeloupe and Réunion, the vaccination rate in these territories remains low. . Yes around 63% of the French population has received at least one dose of vaccine, this proportion drops to around 42% in Réunion, and around 22% in Martinique, Guadeloupe and Guyana.
“Our populations have a major risk of developing severe forms of Covid-19 due to the high prevalence of overweight / obesity, diabetes, high blood pressure, and also the existence of a large proportion of people over the age of 60 “, write the signatories.
Faced with the mistrust of the population of these territories with regard to vaccination, these doctors and scientists, who claim to have themselves “received a full vaccination”, also want to reassure on the“efficiency” vaccines against Covid-19. Vaccines “have followed all the scientific steps allowing them to be approved by the national and international drug agencies “, they continue. And to conclude: “Get vaccinated. It is the best weapon to beat this pandemic.”
