According to a study, 16.6% of people living in the same household as a confirmed case of Covid have themselves been infected.
An enclosed place where promiscuity is the order of the day and where barrier gestures fall, the home is a major place of Covid-19 contamination, according to an analysis that has just appeared on the Jama Network Open site. Its authors, from American universities, gathered the observations of 54 international studies which mobilized nearly 78,000 participants. They deduce that 16.6% of people living in the same household as a confirmed case of Covid have themselves been infected.
This is much more than for other coronaviruses such as SARS (7.5%) or Mers (4.7%). “This difference is not really surprising, however notes Mircea Sofonea, lecturer in epidemiology of infectious diseases at the University of Montpellier. For SARS, for example, contagiousness only came after the onset of symptoms; there was also a low proportion of asymptomatics. ” Patients knew they were infected and could isolate themselves so as not to infect their loved ones.
