The ‘Partygate’ scandal, the parties held in Downing Street during lockdowns, stole the headlines from news that would have made Boris Johnson’s honey in other circumstances: On Tuesday, a leading British scientist claimed that the country would be one of the very first countries in the world to emerge from the pandemic, if it wasn’t already. According to Professor David Heymann, of the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine, the very high levels of immunity in Britain (95% of the population) now seem “keep the virus at bay”. Whoever chaired Public Health England predicts the coronavirus will soon settle into normal spread patterns seen with other infections.
