Covid: Tension mounts and controls are stepped up

The Minister for Industry, Agnès Pannier-Runacher announces “Major deliveries next week” vaccine against Covid-19. The deliveries are “Between 2.5 million and 3 million doses, with a gradual rise to nearly 4 million doses at the end of April, the beginning of May”, specified the minister, Saturday March 27, on Europe1.

“This allows us to confirm the objective of 30 million French people vaccinated at the end of June”, she added. In total France has already exceeded 10 million injections.

Scaling up of the vaccination system

Deliveries will come from different laboratories but the main part is based on the contribution of the BioNTech-Pfizer vaccine with nearly 2 million doses from the week of April 5. The minister is also confident about Moderna and Janssen (Johnson and Johnson). Finally, with regard to AstraZeneca at the heart of the controversies, she recalls that the European Union has “Secure the doses, with the blocking of doses in Italy”.

Covid-19: “Outbreak” of the epidemic, were the scientists wrong?

Pending confirmation of this ramp-up of the vaccination system, the government is strengthening controls this weekend. Faced with an epidemic situation “Critical”, in the words of Jean Castex, the police are deployed in airports or road tolls to enforce the ban on travel.

Three departments, Rhône, Aube and Nièvre have been subject since midnight Friday to the restrictive measures already in force in 16 departments, including Paris and its region. For these 19 territories, trips of more than 10 km are prohibited without exemption, a large part of the shops are closed and the high schools operate in half-class.

Among 0-14 year olds, the incidence rate increases

While the third wave of Covid-19 continues to rise – the number of patients in intensive care rose to 4,766 on Friday evening, still approaching the peak of the second wave in the fall (4,900) – , pushed by the English variant, voices are calling for more radical measures, especially for schools.

Unlike many of its European neighbors, France refuses to close them. But faced with the concern, the Minister of Education Jean-Michel Blanquer announced Friday that, in the reconfigured departments, classes would now close as soon as a first patient appears.

Among 0-14 year olds, the incidence rate increased by 31% from March 15 to 21 compared to the previous week, according to the epidemiological point published Friday by the health agency. However, this figure must be compared with the + 41% increase in the screening rate in this age group.

In this context, the debate on a new postponement of the regional and departmental elections scheduled for June 13 and 20 has been relaunched. The executive has indicated that it will comply ” strictly “ in the opinion of the scientific council, which must in principle submit its recommendations Sunday March 28 to Matignon. A defense council will then be held on Wednesday evening to decide on a possible tightening of health measures.
