THE QUESTION. With the vaccine, there is a great temptation to believe that a return to normal life will be soon. As Prime Minister Jean Castex has acknowledged, vaccination against Covid is the main source of “hope“In 2021. This hope is in fact twofold: on the one hand, we could hope that the vaccine will reduce the severity of the Covid-19 disease, especially for vulnerable people; on the other hand, we might hope that the vaccine will prevent the Sars-CoV-2 virus (carrier of the Covid-19 disease) from circulating. It is in relation to this second effect that we have used since the beginning of the epidemic the term “collective immunity“.
However, earlier this week, Olivier Véran, the Minister of Health, declared that he was “convinced that we will reach (it) a good rate of collective immunity without going through the vaccination obligation“.
