Haiti is trying to rebuild itself politically. A new government will be formed in the country on Tuesday, headed by Prime Minister Ariel Henry, who had been appointed by President Jovenel Moïse just before his assassination. In this new government, the interim Prime Minister, Claude Joseph, will resume his post as Minister of Foreign Affairs.

This announcement seems to put an end to the standoff between Claude Joseph and Ariel henry, competing for the leadership of the Haitian executive. “There will be no President of the Republic. The mission of this new government will be to organize the general elections as quickly as possible”, a politician told AFP.

The scales have finally tipped in favor of Ariel Henry, who benefited during the weekend from the support of a group of ambassadors representing the following countries: Germany, Brazil, Canada, Spain, United States, France, European Union, as well as the special representative of the Organization of the American States (OAS) and the Special Representative of the Secretary General of the United Nations.

Washington welcomed the government agreement reached on Monday, welcoming “to see Haitian political and civil actors working for the formation of a unity government that can stabilize the country and lay the foundations for free and fair elections”, in the words of State Department spokesman Ned Price.
