Project to convert edible plants into vaccine begins
Associate Professor Juan Pablo Giraldo said that a ‘single plant would produce enough mRNA to vaccinate a single individual.’ Presently the focus of the program is on lettuce and spinach. Giraldo told that the goal of growing these plants is both in the garden and in the field. He clarified that chloroplasts are the basis for making edible vaccines. These are small parts inside plant cells that convert sunlight into energy.
