An 86-year-old woman was shot and killed at her home in Marseille (Bouches-du-Rhône) on Sunday August 15. Her husband, arrested at the marital home, was taken into custody, the Marseille prosecutor’s office told AFP. The victim was killed “with a single shot”, said the prosecution. She had Alzheimer’s disease, according to the same source.
The facts took place at midday on Sunday in a residential area in the south of the city. At this stage of the investigation, the prosecution was unable to say whether the victim’s husband had a history of domestic violence.
One hundred and forty-six women were killed in 2019 at the hands of their companion or ex-companion, and 90 were killed in 2020. A Grenelle on violence against women was held in 2019, but many systemic difficulties in the fight against feminicides are pointed out by the various observers, associations, magistrates and police officers.
