The Bouygues group and its subsidiary TF1 are entering into exclusive negotiations with the M6 group, franceinfo learned on Monday, May 17 from a source close to the matter. This is the first step in a long series of procedures leading to a merger of the two groups of private channels.
Concretely, Bouygues wants to buy back 30% of the shares of the M6 group. These negotiations will last 18 months, during which TF1 and M6 will retain their current form. At the end of these 18 months, if the negotiations are successful, the current chairman of the management board of the M6 group Nicolas de Tavernost will be proposed as chairman of the new entity. A new position, superior to that of Nicolas de Tavernost, will be created for the current CEO of the TF1 group Gilles Pelisson.
These discussions come in the midst of a marriage between the two American television giants WarnerMedia and Discovery, announced on Monday, and as traditional media groups seek to resist streaming platforms such as Netflix and Disney + and the GAFA.
