Paris: an armed man arrested after entering a church

The 28-year-old suspect was taken into police custody. Strongly alcoholic, the investigators wait for him to sober up to question him.

An armed man was arrested Sunday, August 29 in the morning when he had just entered a church in the 19th arrondissement of Paris, franceinfo learned from a police source, confirming information from the newspaper The Parisian. An investigation is open.

The 28-year-old suspect was taken into police custody but, being very heavily alcoholic, he could not be heard immediately by investigators. The suspect is very unfavorably known to the police for common law offenses. There is no terrorist character retained at this stage.

It was the priest of the Saint-Luc parish, located rue de l’Ourcq, who sounded the alert around 10:30 am. He had just spotted a man with a disturbing and agitated demeanor. Above all, he recognized the butt of a gun sticking out in his shoulder bag. The suspect had explained to him that he wanted to come back around 11 am to attend the service.

Police officers from the Ile-de-France Network Brigade (BRF) finally arrested him around 11:20 am, in the area also monitored by personnel from the Anti-Crime Brigade (BAC). They found on him a revolver loaded with two cartridges.

The 28-year-old man is in police custody in the premises of the judicial police. He will only be heard when he has totally sobered up. The investigators will seek to clarify his profile and to know if he had a real malicious intention, or if it relates to the psychiatric disease. No track is ruled out.
