A Ukrainian diplomat has been arrested by the Russian security services (FSB), who accuse him of having received sensitive information from a Russian citizen, the FSB announced on Saturday (April 17th) in a statement. This is Alexandre Sossoniouk, a consul at the Ukrainian Consulate General in Saint Petersburg. He was caught “hand in the bag” during a meeting with a Russian citizen while seeking to obtain classified information, according to the FSB.

“Such activity is incompatible with diplomatic status and of a clearly hostile nature to the Russian Federation”, commented again the FSB, adding that “measurements” would be taken from him, “in accordance with international law”. An arrest to which Kiev replied: “this is yet another provocation among Russia’s activities aimed at destabilizing” Ukraine, the foreign ministry spokesman said in a statement sent to AFP.

Since the annexation of Crimea in 2014 by Moscow and the start of the conflict in the Russian-speaking and pro-independence east of Ukraine, Russia has arrested a number of Ukrainian citizens on charges of espionage, but the arrest of ‘a diplomat is rare. In recent weeks, tensions have increased between the two countries, with Kiev accusing Moscow of massing troops on its border in an attempt to destroy the Ukrainian state.
