Alexeï Navalny on Thursday August 19 called on Westerners to act more resolutely against corruption. The imprisoned Russian opponent considers the phenomenon to be at the origin of the great world crises, according to an op-ed published in several European newspapers such as The world, The Guardian and the Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung.

Anti-corruption activist and bête noire of the Kremlin, Alexei Navalny is currently serving a two-and-a-half-year prison sentence for a fraud case he denounces as a policy. He had returned to Russia in January from recovery from suspected poisoning.

According to the opponent, “corruption has long ceased to be an internal problem” authoritarian countries, including Russia, but “one of the main causes of the global challenges that the West also faces “. He called on Westerners to raise corruption as a priority issue at international summits and to put the subject on the table during meetings with authoritarian leaders, including Vladimir Putin, even if it is “embarrassing”.

According to him, corruption in authoritarian countries is facilitated by Western financial systems, where stolen money is often transferred, and he thus proposes five measures in response. “realistic, easy to apply”.

Alexei Navalny proposes, among other things, to create a category of “countries which encourage corruption” to make it easier to take retaliatory measures. He also suggests introducing a “transparency obligation” for Western companies wishing to work with partners in these countries, and to found an organization tasked with “preventing the export of corruption”.
