TESTIMONY. “I grew up with the weight of silence”: Guillaume, victim of rape for almost 15 years, wants to break the taboo of incest

The Olivier Duhamel case continues to free speech on incest. Victim of rape by his father from the age of 5, Guillaume testifies in turn to try to break a taboo that has only made him suffer too much. This incest, which he suffered for almost fifteen years, destroyed his childhood. “Usually it was at night, in my room, when mum slept, and then a few times during the day, when I was alone with him. I grew up with that, with the weight of this story, and the weight of the silence“, he explains to journalists from France Televisions.

For years, Guillaume was unable to denounce his attacker. “He told me that if I did talk about it, I would have problems, and this is something that I integrated as a child. The fear of having problems, of destroying my mother and father’s couple, of destroying my family, kept me from speaking. “

Finally, at the age of 27, he finds the courage to put into words what he has suffered, and decides to file a complaint. His father admits the facts, but dies before being tried. Guillaume then begins a process of reconstruction, which leads him to the edge of the abyss. “The real nightmare for me was after“, he recalls, evoking the OCD of storage and cleanliness, anxiety, his depression, then his desire to die, and his numerous suicide attempts.

For two years, Guillaume no longer works, for fear of submitting to someone who could “raise your voice“, and awaken in him his sufferings. But today, he has managed to cope with the trauma, to overcome it.”Sometimes I tell myself that if I have the chance to be what I am, it is thanks to that, I managed to make it a force. I think everyone, unfortunately, doesn’t get over this, and I get up, and that’s great“, he concludes, very moved.
