The Château de Chaumont-sur-Loire inaugurates its “digital gallery” dedicated to digital arts

Famous for its castle, its International Garden Festival and for the past fifteen years for its “Art Season”, the Domaine de Chaumont-sur-Loire offers itself a new artistic space called the Digital Gallery. A space of 200 square meters entirely focused on digital art and arranged in the attic of the east wing of the castle. An idea born during major restoration work in this part of the building.

As the framework appeared and there was an extraordinary volume, I told myself that a digital gallery would echo the experiments we conducted in this area. We are respectful of heritage, old walls, old works, and we look to our time. And when we are lucky enough to be able to bridge the gap between the past, the present and the future, I tell myself that we are playing our role as an arts and nature center“, says Chantal Colleu-Dumond, director of the Domaine de Chaumont and exhibition curator.

For its first exhibition, the Digital Gallery is hosting a world creation by the Italian artist Davide Quayola, a specific commission from the Estate, financed by the Centre-Val de Loire Region. A work called Evening Effects with impressionist accents, with as a starting point shots of plants from the gardens of Chaumont, reworked using software of its composition. The artist also signs the sound universe that accompanies the visitors.

I wanted to create a computer process that could imitate the impressionist current, and at the same time go beyond human processing. I like to play with the idea of non-human virtuosity. The work refers to a historical pictorial movement, but also offers other digital ways to explore the subject.“, explains Davide Quayola.

For the fifteenth edition of its Art Season, the Chaumont-sur-Loire Arts and Nature Center will welcome, from April 2 to October 30, fifteen artists of all ages and backgrounds, invited to create specially works that will find a place in the castle, its outbuildings and in the estate’s parks.

The International Garden Festival, which will celebrate its thirtieth anniversary this year, will take place from April 21 to November 6.
