The government will thus be formed four days after the appointment of the new Prime Minister, who on Thursday affirmed her desire to have “the best team”.

The very first Council of Ministers will be held on Monday, May 23. That is nearly a month after the re-election of the Head of State (April 24) and three weeks before the first round of legislative elections (June 12). The handover ceremonies in the ministries will take place by Monday between the outgoing and the new arrivals.

“Obviously we are not hanging out. I can assure you that we are working very closely on it”said Elisabeth Borne on Thursday, when asked about the expectations of the new government during her first trip to Les Mureaux (Yvelines), as Prime Minister.

Also questioned about the deadlines, Emmanuel Macron for his part underlined that the formation of a government required “time, substantive exchanges (…) therefore as much time as useful and necessary”.

To prepare it, Elisabeth Borne went to the Elysée several times, consulted the former Prime Ministers Edouard Philippe and Bernard Cazeneuve (ex-PS), as well as political leaders and social partners.
