LE FIGARO. – What are the links between Europe, Russia and Ukraine in civil space?

Christian Mayor. – There are cooperations in almost all fields: space transport, manned flight, exploration and satellites. Some large satellites are transported, for example, by Antonov cargo planes and the electric propulsion of several satellites is ensured by electric motors developed by the Russian company Fakel. In terms of launchers, the strongest dependence is linked to the Soyuz, which is marketed by Arianespace for launches from Kourou, in Guyana, and via the Russian-European company Starsem for Baikonur and Vostotchny. Russia has recalled its employees in Guyana and the six launches of the OneWeb constellation planned for Baikonur in 2022 have been suspended.

In this context, it becomes more important than ever to carry out the first flight of Ariane 6 as soon as possible.
