Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky announced Thursday, February 24, the death of at least 137 of his fellow citizens since the start of the Russian invasion Thursday morning. “137 heroes, our citizens” lost their lives, he said in a video address posted on the presidency’s website and on his Facebook page, adding that 316 other Ukrainians were injured in the fighting.
The precise assessment of the deadly battles on the ground is difficult to establish. On Thursday, the Ukrainian army general staff said in a statement that its forces had killed around 50“Russian occupiers near the locality of Shchastia”, in eastern Ukraine. Ukraine also said it had shot down five Russian planes and a helicopter.
