The academy of the World Health Organization (WHO), must finally be installed this Monday, September 27, in Lyon. His goal ? Deploy an international training offer to fill a lack of “18 million health workers by 2030”, explains a spokesperson for the project.

While a large part of the courses will be given online (around ten programs are already available), around 16,000 people will be able to benefit from them, face-to-face, in premises in Lyon. This establishment “Physical” should be inaugurated in 2023 in the Gerland district, less than 200 km from the Geneva headquarters of the UN agency.
A solid reputation in health
The metropolis of Lyon, which has already hosted an office associated with the WHO since 2015, enjoys a solid reputation in the area of health. Nearly 230 structures supporting innovation and the development of health products or services are located there, like the International Cancer Research Center (Circ), and thus form the “Lyonbiopôle” competitiveness cluster. .

Added to this is an important university fabric: beyond the establishment of the École normale supérieure and the National Center for Scientific Research (CNRS), more than 650 professionals working in the network of Hospices Civils de Lyon are dedicated to looking. “And that’s without counting the obvious synergy with world-renowned groups, such as BioMérieux, Boehringer and Sanofi! », Exclaims the president of the metropolis, Bruno Bernard.
A national strategy
At the head of the community since July 2020, the elected official explains that he immediately took charge of this file “Essential for the influence of the territory”, but complexin terms of management and deadlines. While the budget, estimated at 120 million euros for France, was slow to be finalized, the metropolis, as well as the municipality and the region, participated to the tune of 10 million.
The community has also started to invest concretely by providing, for example, premises for training in partnership with the firefighters of the department. What to rejoice the president of the metropolis, who however recalls that a project of international scope must also and above all fall under the State.
Placed under the executive direction of the former French Minister of Health Agnès Buzyn, the academy aims to become “The reference training structure in public health”, declared Emmanuel Macron in 2019. ” We must now ensure that we have health systems and professionals capable of reacting effectively in the event of a new crisis ”, we explain to the Elysee. In the long term, the ambition is therefore to be able to provide a collective response, involving “Common codes of good conduct” and “Greater international solidarity”.
